Fire-Rated Drywall Repairs & Firestopping

TRIMWORKS performs fire-rated drywall repair and firestopping work as part of commercial and multifamily construction projects where rated assemblies and penetrations must be restored in accordance with the project requirements.

Two Related Scopes

Protect the Integrity of the Rated Assembly.

A fire-resistance-rated wall or ceiling depends on the complete assembly. When the assembly is damaged or penetrated by building services, repairs must address the specified components and the condition around the opening.

TRIMWORKS coordinates rated drywall repairs and firestopping as construction scopes, with attention to the project documents, listed systems and required closeout information.

Commercial Fire Protection Construction

Where TRIMWORKS Fits Into the Scope

01

Fire-Rated Drywall

Installation and repair of gypsum wall assemblies where the project requires rated construction.

02

Penetration Firestopping

Protection around qualifying pipe, conduit, cable and other penetrations through rated assemblies.

03

Rated Joint Systems

Fire-resistive joint work where rated walls, floors or other assemblies meet.

04

Repair & Renovation

Restoring rated construction after alterations, damage or new building-service work.

The System Matters

Firestop Is Not Just Red Caulk Around a Hole.

UL explains that successful firestopping depends on using the correct products in accordance with a tested and listed system and the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

The assembly type, penetrating item, opening size, annular space, backing material and firestop material can all be part of that listed system. Substituting components or improvising the detail can change the performance of the assembly.

Coordination Matters

Rated Walls Change as Other Trades Move Through Them.

Electrical, plumbing, mechanical and communication work can all create new penetrations. On renovation projects, fire-rated construction should be reviewed as those changes happen rather than waiting until the wall is ready to close.

Firestopping FAQs

Common Questions

What is firestopping?

Firestopping protects penetrations and joints in fire-resistance-rated construction using tested systems designed to help maintain the required rating.

Is fire-rated drywall the same as firestopping?

No. Fire-rated drywall is part of the wall or ceiling assembly. Firestopping protects qualifying penetrations and joints that interrupt rated construction.

Can any firestop product be used around a penetration?

No. The product and installation detail need to correspond with the tested or otherwise approved system for the specific assembly and penetration condition.

Can rated walls be repaired after other trades cut into them?

Often, yes, but the repair needs to account for the original rated assembly and any penetrations created by the new work.
